Sea ice reconnaissance during HEM-bird flights

During the helicopter-borne ice thickness measurements with the HEM-bird the AWI team took photographs of the sea ice cover in random intervals along the flight track. In general, the flight altitude of the helicopter was about 80 ft. The pictures were taken out of the left rear window of the helicopter, i.e. the display does not exactly cover the path of the instrument, but documents the general ice situation during the respective flight. In particular large leads, prominent ridges as well as strongly rubbled areas are considered. In general, changes of the surface pattern of the ice cover are documented.

In the following all flights during which photographs have been made are listed. The pictures are presented as animated GIF-files in two different resolutions: low (600x450 pixel) and high (2048x1536 pixel). Flight tracks followed current buys positions and were restricted by the range of the helicopter. In most cases the flight pattern resembles a triangles in order to achieve best spatial coverage. Buoys numbers are abbreviated and only last two digits of the official code 743xx are listed.
